Writer's Diary #4: All For Love of Research

Writer's picture: Laura J. PowellLaura J. Powell

Okay, research is the mainstay of any author who gives a damn about the world she's creating, but I gotta say, writing a romance novel is hell on the nerves, the time, and the heart.

Today, I've been trying to write a non-cheesy scene about my character's preoccupation with the beads of water rolling down her love interest's chest. However, in lieu of a real set of six pack abs to ogle myself at home, I had to resort to the internet to get the description right.

What did I look for exactly? Well, I had to look up Henry Cavill, of course! And I was hoping to find that hollow just inside the shoulder, created by the trapezius muscles and the clavicle bones, and I found it...along with 8 billion other photos of Henry Cavill shirtless. And then I started thinking about the names of all of the other muscles on display, and then got worried for him because he was displaying his make up scars from his current show, and I had to watch a video to find out they were fake...And let me tell ya, when you go down that rabbit hole, it's incredibly hard to pull yourself out!

Check here to know my pain:

My poor character has been kidnapped by someone with a body like that (lucky her!), and she's having as much difficulty as me staying focused, but I didn't want to channel her, I wanted to help explain her preoccupation, and found myself falling into the same trap.

As a last ditch effort to pull myself back into line, I clicked over here to express my dilemma. ;)
