So, what I’m finding as I’m writing, is that I have just needed the freedom to write the scenes I want

in the order I want them, and then the realization of how to organize and revise them comes as I hash out a couple more scenes.

For example, on my latest piece, Family Matters, I thought that my kidnapping scene was going to be the second on my list. However, it turns out that it’s actually in three separate parts (so far)—Lindsay’s experience with her scavenger hunt team, Liam’s hopeless desperation as he realizes his cousins have just ruined his future, not to mention their own, and then the first interactions at Liam’s house in Tiburon. Additionally, I love my introduction to Lindsay and feel that it fits her character to a ’T,’ but I hate Liam’s intro. I have way overdone the exposition, and it feels like I lost the comedic timing that was so good in Lindsay’s intro.

As a second draft, I’m thinking of making Lindsay’s intro the Prologue, then splicing the three kidnapping scenes into one chapter, while keeping Liam’s piece as a resource to mine as I progress through future chapters.

I’m also finding that I have an unhealthy regard for people’s opinions on social media. Just this afternoon, I posted Part 3 of Family Matters, and when I didn’t get fast feedback with clicks and likes on Facebook and Wattpad, I was feeling pretty crushed. I seriously sat in front of my computer screen, attempting to write something else, but rechecking my pages every 5 minutes for over an hour, at which point I had to stop. I talked myself out of feeling like a loser of a writer, and decided to back up my story on my own pc, plan future social media posts with other kinds of material besides the story updates to keep readers interested, and am now writing this as a blog post. That’s going to become important in a few days, since one of my posts on FB is scheduled to be a “Follow Me!” post with links to all of my social media.

And now I’m off to create a character map, since it will help me stay clear on my novel plot and characters, and it will also be a small extra for any loyal readers. ;)
